ARL: News - Summer 2008

NEW Schedule...
We have had a small issue with the Wave Hockey Ice times. Please take a look at the new schedule and you will notice new times (actually one new time slot). This is the best we could work out with our Wave partners. The team by team schedules have changed slightly as well.

August Already!
Wow...hard to believe our summer season has nearly come to an end.  Congratulations to all for making the ARL such a success.  We have appreciated the encouragement, input and patience from players, captains and goalies. It has helped us make some important decisions.  We hope you have had a great time this summer but we will ask for some feedback before the winter season begins.  And speaking of winter....  a couple of things... Schedule Change!
So...Our news of the week!  In the interest of promoting fun, well-balanced games we (Scot and I)  have made a decision.  Please realize that time is an issue and because of this,  we are unable to do our usual league survey and get player input. What we have decided is for the remainder of the summer season, the top four teams will play each other (in Scot's Scorers Division) and the bottom four teams will play each other (in Pat's Pros Division). Hopefully, this will eliminate those frustrating 7-1 or 6-0 blow out games that are really no fun for anyone.  Check the schedule now - all remaining games have been adjusted - check before your next game.

Also, please let your team Captain know when you won't be able to make a game as soon as you know.  This will eliminate teams being too short at game time and help keep ice time evenly spread out among poolies.  Pool players are always anxious to play.

Halfway News!

The ARL is now halfway through our first season!  It's been a great time so far.  A few minor wrinkles have been ironed out and probably a few more to come!  We appreciate your feedback in all of these issues.  It's so helpful to get some idea of how the players and captains are feeling about things.  More >>

Trade!
Scott Mandell and Margaret Wilson were traded today from the Drips to the Lightning in exchange for Denise, Fred and Eric Zawislak. We then added Patte Beltrame to the Lightning to complete their roster. We thank the players and Captains involved in making this happen and wish everyone good luck with their new teams!

June Update

June is here with all it's hot weather and sunshine!  Nice to walk in that cool arena on Friday nights and enjoy the ice. The ARL has had a great beginning.  We have appreciated all of your comments, input and patience while we work on making some necessary changes to the league.  More >>

Changes Changes!
We've been listening to you, players!  Thanks for your input.  We have decided, with the help of all captains, that some changes need to be made to The ARL.  We realize the skill level in this league varies and we need to figure out ways to give our true rookies more chance to get safely in the game, carry the puck, shoot on net. Rule Changes >>

Fall / Winter Ice Times
WINTER REGISTRATION is now available and filling fast.  We are planning for 10 teams.  For our 10-team Schedule on Friday nights this Fall/Winter we have secured the following times: 8:30/9:30/10:30 on one side and 9:45 and 10:45 on the other side. Please note that these times may change however we are commited to not playing later than 11pm.

Please help the true Rookies!
So we are a few games into the season now.  The ARL is a huge hit!  Thank you all for that.  Our first Learning nights are about to begin and is full of eager, ready to skate rookies!   If this is the success we think it will be, we will run another similar skills package before the winter season begins. And as for winter, spots are filling up very quickly.  We are hoping for 12 teams but due to limited ice times, we may be limited to 10.  We are working on that as the demand is there for this league to grow rapidly!  Ice, ice, ice...never enough.

So just a couple of quick reminders to all players!  We all need to approach each game in an ARL state of mind!  Please help the true newbies.  This league is all about learning and having fun.  We have some skilled players in this league that can offer alot to others.  Pass the puck...let people occasionally skate past you!  As a true newbie myself, I know how exciting it actually is to be able to carry the puck a bit or have someone PASS me the PUCK!  WoooHooo!  I know the adrenalin rush and the excitement and enthusiasm playing hockey brings.  It's easy to forget what we're all out there to do.  We want to be able to keep this league with a mix of skill level. That is our goal.  The main concerns we're hearing is that some players are too good.  No player can be too good to teach a Rookie.  Let's just have some fun!

Cheers!    Pat-the-Drip-Baranowski

Goalies locked up for 2008/09!
We really love our current goalies and have given them the opportunity to officially join now for the next season – this Fall/Winter. For Fall/Winter, ARL goalies will pay a rate of $100 each for the season. This money will go directly to the ARL and be used for jersey replacements and any league-related expense – remember we are not a Profit league and we hope to be able to present a donation to a charity each year – as small as that may be. All goalie positions for Fall/Winter 2008/09 have now been filled.

Trade between Homies and QBs!
Hope your ARL season so far is going well and that you're enjoying yourself!  You're all playing great.  In the interest of keeping our teams balanced and the ARL as much fun as possible, we have decided to do a bit of a trade.  Kellie Frizell will now be playing for the In House Homies.  Hope you like orange Kellie!  They're a great bunch of people and I know you will enjoy being on that team. Kellie was traded for John French. John will help the Grillers concentrate on scoring goals for a change.

Learn & Impove!
We keep telling everyone that the ARL is NOT about winning but there is nothing wrong with wanting to improve your skills and take advantage of some free volunteer training from people that have been skating for a lifetime. Our first-ever ARL school is FULL and starts in June - Thanks to all that have signed up. We hope to have a second session pre-Fall/Winter.

Update - Ready to Play!
Well, we have now all completed our exhibition games and teams are ready to start the season! Thanks to all who joined us for the games. We welcome any input into how those games played out.  Hope all went well for everyone.  I think the #1 thing to remember in this Rookie league is help out the true rookies.  The less-experienced player needs to be encouraged to get into the play.  Pass them the puck!  Let them skate with it. It does wonderful things for the confidence of a new player to actually feel part of the game.  We've tried to scatter the seasoned players evenly onto each team so they can help out the newbies.  This should work out well.
