Crease rule updated.

Our ARL goalies recnetly reviewed the ARL rule concerning Foot-in-the-crease and agreed to update this rule to allow players to have a skate in the crease without the call being blown dead. Relaxing this rule - documented on our rules page - should allow for more hockey and less face-offs.

Swap No More.

Thanks to everyone for their input regarding our player swap night.  Judging by the results of our poll, we have decided not to continue the Swap nights.  We are always interested in trying something to keep  the league fun and social.  Please let us know if you have any suggestions.

We need to to know how many teams we will have for our New Year's Tournament ASAP so please, if you think you will join us - sign up now.  We will be organizing actual teams later December.

The skills session will be cancelled for Oct 24th.  We will try and re-arrange this for a Saturday in late November.  The date and sign up will be posted here.

ARL Tourney - sign up now.

Registration for the tournament between Christmas and New Years is on our website.  Many have signed up already but we are trying to confirm number of teams so we can organize our ARL division.  If you think you will be playing, please sign up now.
We have had lots of input, both positive and negative, about our player swap night so we are asking for you opinion. There is a poll on the website.  Please vote.  We will do these polls off and on during the season so we can be sure and get players involved in league decisions.

ARL Skills

The ARL is pleased to offer our own SKILLS session once again October 24th at 3pm.  This will be an hour that will include skills, drills and then half hour of shinny.  It's great fun, a good workout and some extra ice time to learn new skills or practice old.  This hour is totally separate from the program the WAVE offers.  This is only available to ARL members.  The cost per skater is $15 for the hour to be paid at the time of the session. This will take place at the WAVE sports centre off the North Service Road.

As we are mentioning skills, this is probably a good time to remind players not to skate faster than their stopping ability allows....To make that clearer...please don't skate so fast that you are out of control and need to use the boards or a team member  OR the goalie to stop!  I know it's tough when you see that puck and are going for it but...safety first!

There is also a great tournament the WAVE runs between Christmas and New Years.  Please sign up early so we can reserve times with the Wave.  We will have an ARL division in this tournament. Guaranteed 3 games so lots of ice time!  Sign up now and we will get working on putting some teams together.

ARL September News!

We are now moving into our second month of the Fall/Winter ARL season.  This past Saturday was our first monthly Skills/Shinny and was a huge success.  All skaters that attended are asking for more of these. We have an hour of ice one Saturday a month.  Please keep an eye on the website for the details on the next session.  The next skills session will be October 24th... MORE

ARL New Season Welcome

Welcome to the Fall/Winter ARL season!  Once again this season, we have 2 divisions.  The beginner division is for our newest rookies.  The Rookie division is for the beginner that has more experience on the ice.  Neither division is for overly-competitive, aggressive hockey. The league is about a fun evening of hockey with your friends!  We have added 2 new teams to our league this season so will have 8 teams in the beginner division and 6 teams in the rookie division.  Each team has a captain that has volunteered his/her time to help out.  Please let your captains know if you cannot make it to a game.

Check our website often as this is where  we will post upcoming events ie:  tournaments, skills sessions.  These fill up quickly and are great fun.

New this season: 4 of our games will be Player Swap Fridays!  A girl and guy from each team will switch places with a girl and guy from the opposing team.  Mix things up a bit in the true spirit of the social league the ARL is.  And it's great fun to play against your teammates! Your captain will choose the players off the opposing team and it may include their goalie.

We are looking forward to a great season. Try to be at the arena 45 minutes before your first game to pick up your jersey and socks for the season – and if you still have one of our jerseys please bring it with you. Please feel free to contact us with any comments, suggestions or concerns.  We always welcome player input.

ARL Final Summer Championships

The schedule is now posted for Play-Off-Friday.  Please have a look and make sure you know when you play. Remember to hand in your jersey and socks after your team`s final game and if you are unable to make Friday`s finals, please drop off to the Wave office - thank you and have fun in the finals! Let's try and remember that the championship games are still just for fun.  We don't need any craziness out there.  And please respect our refs.  They are doing the best they can to manage the games.

Mid-Season Note

Just a mid-season note to say hope everyone is having a good time in our summer league.   We've done a few minor trades since the start of the season.  Thanks to all that co-operated with this and have settled in with their new teams.

After much discussion with our captains, we have decided to start using a combination of certified refs and player refs.  We are gradually adding in certified refs and will continue to do so.  Please be patient as we work our way through this.  Any change always takes a bit of time to become totally successful.  Any ref will  make calls we don't agree with or miss calls we thought they shouldn't have missed no matter certified or not certified, Please try and just accept this and move on with the game. They do the best they can.

We will be putting some information on the website about a day of golf... just for those that might want to get together with ARL friends.  This won't be a tournament or a fundraiser - just a get-together, so watch for info about that coming soon.

Also, be sure to check the site  to see who is "Rookie-of-the-week" .  This can be a goalie, player, ref or coach.  If you have anyone you think has had an exceptionally good game... please feel free to let us know.

Hard to believe but August 1st is almost around the corner.  This is the deadline for payment of winter registration.  Our beginner division is almost full.  The Rookie division still has a few spots.  Please sign up on the website.   www.rookiehockey.ca.

Hope everyone is having a great summer so far.
As always, suggestions, concerns, are always welcome.
Compliments  about our wonderful ARL are to be directed to Pat Baranowski
Complaints go directly to Scot Cameron.

ARL Summer Hockey News

Greetings All ARLers! Our first two weeks of Summer 2009 are now in the Stats.  Hope everyone is having a great time out there on the ice and off.  Thanks again for joining us and for playing the game in the true ARL spirit.  We've seen lots of players encouraging each other, passing the puck, backing off just a bit for the Newbies.  It's all great to see everyone thinking more about having fun than winning the game or scoring a goal.

Just to put everyone’s mind at ease, we've made a few small changes in the Rosters to even out the play a bit.  It seems that these changes have eliminated the need for trades at this time.  We will go ahead with teams as they are but of course we reserve the right to make further moves if necessary.

Our winter registration is up on the website - http://www.rookiehockey.ca/ARL_Registration.htm We have already had many people join so thanks to all of you for your enthusiasm!  Now that we have announced winter registration, spots will go very quickly so please sign up asap. Please note that spots will be reserved as they are paid (first paid, first reserved basis). So register now and lock it in with your payment before the due date.

Some good news -- the money we made from our 50/50 draw on tournament day along with proceeds from our winter season have allowed us to make some charitable donations. We have been able to sponsor two children to go to Camp TEAD this summer. We were also able to make a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation on behalf of the ARL. We would like to continue supporting local charities through donations whenever possible so we will try to work on a fundraiser or two over the summer. We thank you for your participation and suggestions.

Please always feel free to bring any comments or concerns to your captain or directly to Scot or Pat.  We are interested in your input!

ARL Evaluations Friday April 24, 2009

Only one more week until we kick off our ARL-summer 2009.  Rosters are posted and the summer schedule is ready to go.  Please check the game times for May 8th as there have been a couple of recent changes. Our summer teams look great with a good mix of skill level on all.  Evaluations are happening for new players tomorrow (Friday, April 24).  If you are new to the league and don't have an evaluation time, please contact Scot or Pat.  These evaluations involve a couple of quick drills and then some fun shinny!  A great way to welcome new players to the league.

We will be giving our rules a bit of an update and will have them on the website shortly.  And keep an eye on the guys and girls wearing the stripes!  We'll be welcoming a new group of refs for the summer.  These refs have all played in or are still playing in the ARL.  They will have a great understanding of how our league works and what the ARL is all about.  Fun, non-aggressive hockey!
Winter Registration details have been confirmed with The Wave.   All details will be posted on the web site in the next few days.
The ARL continues to grow and be a great league for a fun, social night of hockey.  Thanks to everyone who has joined us for the summer.  It's going to be a great season!  As always, please feel free to bring us any comments or suggestions.  We welcome your input!

ARL End of Season Update

The winter season has gone by very quickly and we are now upon our final weekend of play.  Thanks so much to everyone for helping to make this league the fun, social experience we were hoping for.  A few things to note for this Friday and Saturday's games.  First, all games on Friday will begin 15 minutes late.  Saturday's games are shown on the schedule.  To find out what time you play, please check the website Saturday morning as it will be updated after the results of Friday night's games are in.

Saturday is promising to be lots of fun!  Playoff games, consolation games, All-Star games and then ending with the ARLies..the ARL Awards for the season.  The ARLies will be hosted by Nigel Sloan.  Along with awards, we will have a 50/50 draw and door prizes.  This is also the time to use all your teams party dollars which have been collected by each team throughout the year.  Your team captain will check with bar staff to see how much you have collected over the season.  There is some talk that the Tipster will be appearing as the celebrity guest of the evening. He, of course, will have something to say to all.  Perhaps some predictions for the season to come?

Thanks to all who have registered and paid for the summer season.  We are NOW FULL for Summer registration and ONLY accepting WAIT LIST registrations.  Winter registration will be available very shortly so keep an eye on the website for that and register early.

One last thing.....we still need players for the Spring Blast tournament hosted by the Wave.  It's always a great time.  You can register on-line and bring payment to the first game.  It's the weekend of April 17-19.  We are hoping to enter 8 teams this time. Only 10 players per team so lots of ice time guaranteed!

ARL Summer 2009 - Divisions

Hello ARL Players! It seems that we need to provide a bit more information about the Summer 2009 - two Division ARL.  To clarify, we are not creating a new division for super-star, super-fast, rec-style hockey.  We’ve decided to re-name the divisions....Rookie and Beginner-Rookie.  No ADVANCED.  That seemed to give players the idea that you had to have recently played in the NHL to be able to play in that division!  So our Rookie division is basically the same hockey that we play now.  The Beginner-Rookie division will be for players that are newer Rookies and want to play hockey with other newer Rookies and perhaps improve their basic skills before graduating to our Rookie Division.

Please know that we intend to make sure that we develop our ROOKIE league as safe, fun social co-ed hockey. We will be diligent in making sure players that are overly competitive or aggressive are not only penalized but suspended or asked to leave without refund.

ARL Tournament Winners
Thanks to all who joined us for the Dave Conacher Sr. Memorial Tournament at the Wave over the January 2nd weekend.  We had six teams.

White ,lead by Captain Mary.
Red Storm..best looking team on the ice...thanks to the Tipsters jerseys.
Purple...the worst looking team on the ice (with some of the best players)
Light Blue, from the always famous Drips,
Black..courtesy of Stoney Creek ladies  (thanks Cindy)  and of course
Captain Ali and her crew of Orange.

Teams were very evenly matched so the games were all pretty close.  Everyone had a great time with lots of hockey, exercise and socializing.  Teams for the tournament had a mixture of players from various ARL teams so it was great to get to know  some new teammates. All teams did well and it was close who would actually get to the championship game on Sunday but ended up being Jake's Red Storm vs.  Mary's Mighty White's.   Jake's Red was leading 3-0 at the end of the first but after Mary's go-team-go speech...Mighty white won the Championship game 5-3.

It was a great weekend!  We have reserved a spot for 6 teams for our WAHL Spring Blast Tournament – April 17 – 19th, 2009. When the info is available, we will put it on the website. Thank you to everyone that signed up to play with us!

After 10 Games...
The Fall/Winter season is now well under way!  Great job to all ARL members... Player's, goalies, captains, coaches.  You've all played a part in getting things off to a great start.  We've done a few trades, a bit of shuffling around of players and goalies, and we seem to have come up with a good mix of teams that play well against each other.  It's been great to see all you super-star Rookies passing that puck to our Newbies and giving them the encouragement that they need.  We have to continue to remember that our games are all about having fun, socializing and getting some exercise. > Read More

Stop the clock...
We listened to the players and captains requests to do something about our penalty shots taking up so much game time... Since last week we implemented a Stop Time during Penalty Shots rule change. We think it's working well - thanks to everyone for their feedback.

Breaking News - Trades!
Several trades were made recently affecting NoNames, Etceteras and the Expedites. We wish to thank all of the players that were involved in these transactions. We also wish to introduce a new team Captain - Scott Chadbolt for the NoNames.

Penalty Called... Rule change...
If a player receives a penalty, they will go to the penalty box for a minute and a half. The game will remain with 5 on 5. There will still be a penalty shot. If the penalty shot goes in the net or not, the player in the box remains in the box until their penalty time is up. When the penalty is over, they will simply walk behind and back to their bench. Easy! Right? Any questions? The rule will begin this Friday. Also please remeber that 3 penalties means you go to the dressing room.

Breaking News - Trades!
Several trades were made recently affecting TEAD, Tsunami, Mayhem and the Expedites. We wish to thank all of the players that were involved in these transactions - trades were made to try to level out skill levels. We also wish to introduce a new team Captain - Gurdeep Brar (the Assist-King) for the Tsunami.

ARL Spirit
The Fall/Winter ARL is now 2 games into the season!  Everything has fallen into place and players, new and returning, are on the ice each Friday night.  Glad to see everyone has taken the true ARL spirit to heart. Passing the puck, helping the newbies, playing a fun game of non-aggressive hockey.  We will be talking to all refs to make sure rules are enforced and games well-managed. Please trust that our refs will do the best job they can in keeping games fair, fun and safe! Our first week of hockey was a dressing room disaster!  40 women in one change room does simply NOT work.  We have met with Wave staff and come up with an alternate plan.  Please check the board when you come in for your dressing room number.

SKILLS!  Many players have asked when our skills session is starting.  Ice is being confirmed with the Wave and the dates and price will be posted very shortly. Thanks to everyone for your interest in the Skills Session!  Sounds like it will be a huge success once again!

This season we will choose a charity once again and do some fund raising in the hopes of making a donation.  Anyone have any ideas? So..in closing...great to have you all a part of the ARL!  See you all around or on the ice!

Welcome all ARL Fall/Winter Players!
For those back after the summer season, glad to have you back.  For all new to the league..welcome!  Our teams are ready to go.  Captains have probably contacted all of you or will be doing that soon.  The schedule is up and  the shirts are ordered. Thanks to Jake Smith for all the help in getting our new shirts, socks, and replacement jerseys! So...we're ready to drop the puck!  Hope all of you have a great season.  Please bring any suggestions or comments to us.  We always welcome player input.  The ARL has a great bunch of people and looks like we will have a great winter season. Pass the puck around, enjoy being out there on the ice and... of course... have fun!
